One of my favorite things to do with clients is help them organize their spaces. Not only do I enjoy making a room functional, but look and feel amazing. The stuff we own is doing just the opposite~ it is owning us! When I start an organizing project, my client is always surprised they kept ½ the things we go through.
We are all in a hurry these days. Some of us hurry to get ready and then have to go get our kids ready for the day as well. We have half used toiletries and samples, products and appliances all fighting for space in our bathrooms. Here are my 5 tips to get it all together.
Organizing your bathroom like a Pro >> Tip #1
Get rid of those half used samples and toiletries that you won’t use. If you haven’t used it in a year, you probably never will. It is good to have a purging system. Have a donate, trash, and keep bin available as you go through. The travel samples can be donated to local shelters. You know what needs to be trashed. Finally the other items we are going to put back in a way that makes more sense. Pull everything out and deal with it. Once it is all out, you will be able to see more clearly as to how your going to use the space to its fullest potential.
Organizing your bathroom like a Pro >> Tip #2
For all the things you will keep it is time to find storage solutions to fit each item. You need to be able to see everything clearly. If it is not visible, you will most likely buy it again. You will forget you have it.
Some of my favorite organizing items are:
Organizing your bathroom like a Pro >> Tip #3
Clear those counters! Not only does it look nice to have just a few decorative items on the counter, but for sanitary reasons you want to tuck away anything that will touch your lips. Look, before you think I’m being gross, remember we are talking about bathrooms! It is proven that things are airborne and your toothbrush or cup is the victim! I didn’t make it up. (Read more here) I have an easy tip for you. Use a silverware drawer organizer for the toothbrushes, pastes, etc.
Organizing your bathroom like a Pro >> Tip #4
Consider having an electrician to put outlets inside your bathroom cabinet. You can buy drawer pullouts that store your hair dryers & curling irons safely. No worries of burning little hands that walk by when your done styling, when its too hot to store. You can also buy cabinets with this incorporated. This is what I saw at the International Kitchen & Bath show last week. These were from Kohler. They are an all in one organizing system. I loved them!
Organizing your bathroom like a Pro >> Tip #5
Keep things accessible. Lower any hooks to help kids actually reachable so they can hang up towels. Make cleaning a snap by keeping Clorox wipes where kids or you yourself can clean up counters quickly should you have company unexpected. Finally, a stool ensures that your kids won’t climb the cabinet. And just because you have to design for kids, doesn’t mean you can’t make it stylish. Just upgrading from plastic stool to wood will enhance the look and feel of your space.
If you do these things I promise your bathroom will start working better for you, and you will enjoy getting ready in a clean & organized space.
